    General Guidelines

Yard signs are a valuable way to share information, promote events, support causes and communicate with the community. Whether you’re displaying a political campaign sign, advertising a local event or promoting a business, proper sign placement helps keep Salisbury safe while protecting everyone’s ability to express their message.

The City’s Sign Standards are designed to:

    • Protect public safety
    • Improve traffic safety
    • Reduce hazards for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists
    • Preserve community appearance
    • Support orderly development
    • Balance free expression with public safety

    Place signs responsibly.

Yard signs should be installed on private property with the property owner’s permission and in accordance with the City’s Sign Standards.

    Keep visibility clear.

    Signs should never block:

    • Driver visibility
    • Intersections
    • Traffic signs or signals
    • Sidewalks or accessible routes

    Protect public spaces.

Signs should not be attached to:

    • Utility poles
    • Trees
    • Public infrastructure

Signs should also not be placed within the public right-of-way.

    Maintain your signs.

Property owners and individuals placing signs are responsible for ensuring signs remain upright, in good condition and are removed when no longer needed or as required by ordinance.

    Know Before You Plant

Before installing a yard sign, consider whether it:

    • Is located on private property.
    • Maintains clear visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
    • Avoids utility poles, trees and public infrastructure.
    • Complies with the applicable City sign regulations.

Thoughtful sign placement helps reduce traffic hazards, improves accessibility and keeps Salisbury’s streets and neighborhoods safe for everyone.
