    Writing Assignment

The City of Salisbury plans to announce that an artist will paint a new mural at Waterside Basketball Court. Using the information and quotes provided below, draft a press release to 1.) announce the mural, and, 2.) promote the associated event. Use as much of the information as you deem pertinent.

    • Artist Shelton Hawkins will paint the mural
    • Known for his “Play in Color” works, Hawkins transforms basketball courts into colorful works of art
    • Hawkins’ style is characterized by his use of bold, bright colors and crisp geometry, evoking Mondrian, Calder, and Picasso
    • The mural will be painted ON the basketball court and will require an estimated 225 gallons of paint
    • 25 volunteers will join Hawkins to assist with various tasks in the creation of the mural
    • The city supported this project with a budget of $15,000
    • These courts were recently resurfaced and new basketball equipment installed
    • Completion of the mural will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting and “Basketball Shoot-Out” competition.
    • The ribbon-cutting and Basketball Shoot-Out will take place on Saturday, March 26th, 2022, weather permitting
    • Furthering Salisbury’s urban beautification efforts, this work of public art will join previously-completed murals at VFW 10159, and the intersection of Church Street and Business Rte. 13.

    Quotes

Mayor Jake Day: “This latest work of public art in Salisbury will transform the basketball courts at Waterside Park. Shelton’s use of vibrant colors creates a feeling of energy and excitement, turning any playing surface into a work of art, and lifting its surroundings with positivity.”

Councilwoman April Jackson: “This is a neighborhood that has been underserved for a long time, and I’m happy to say that we have been turning that around for a few years now. This Mayor and the Council together are giving the West Side the attention it has deserved, and that’s benefitting the kids by giving them a place to play and things to do, but also bringing art to their lives which is very important.”

Rachel Manning, Neighbor Relations Manager: “It’s exciting to see another work of art being painted, and especially to see so much collaboration and positive energy around a project like this — it’s overwhelming. We’re very happy to be a part of this process every time.”
