The City of Salisbury’s Street Sweeping Program
Although our street sweeping operations may only appear to be focused on removing litter and debris from our streets for aesthetics, there is much more to our mission! Removing leaves, pine needles and debris from our streets keeps storm drains clear and free from clogging which diminishes the likelihood of high water backups and flooding. Additionally, any debris that makes its way down one of our storm drains into our waterways contributes to water pollution and becomes an immediate hazard to wildlife that call our waterways home. Street sweepers are also responsible for removing a variety of pollutants from the road surface such as heavy metals generated by traffic, lawn fertilizers, pet waste and contaminated sand & gravel.
