LEOPS Retirement
The Law Enforcement Officers Pension System (LEOPS) is a defined benefit plan sponsored by the State of Maryland. Members contribute 7% of their annual earnable compensation and are eligible to retire at age 50 or at any age upon accumulating 25 years of creditable service. The plan pays a benefit of 2% of average final compensation for each year of service up to a maximum benefit of 60% and includes up to a 3% annual COLA, ordinary and accidental disability allowances and death benefits. Members may participate in a Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) between their 25th and 30th years of employment while they continue working and their retirement allowance is placed in an account earning 4% interest. Most creditable service with other Maryland government employers may be transferred to LEOPS.
