The Salisbury Fire Department Shares Christmas Tree Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

    December 15, 2024

SALISBURY, Maryland  – As we embrace the holiday spirit, the Salisbury Fire Department encourages residents to prioritize safety while celebrating. A small fire can spread quickly, especially if a Christmas tree is involved. Follow these essential safety tips to ensure a joyous and fire-smart holiday season:

    Picking the Tree

    • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

    Placing the Tree

    • Cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk before placing the tree in its stand.
    • Keep the tree at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, candles, and heat vents.
    • Ensure the tree does not block any exits.
    • Add water to the tree stand daily to keep it hydrated.

    Lighting the Tree

    • Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory, ensuring they’re appropriate for indoor or outdoor use.
    • Replace lights with worn or broken cords and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on connecting light strands.
    • Never use lit candles as decorations.
    • Turn off all Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

    After Christmas

    • Dispose of the tree promptly when it dries out, as dried-out trees are highly flammable. Contact your local community for recycling options.
    • Store outdoor electrical lights indoors after the holidays to avoid hazards.

    Key Fire Facts

    • Electrical issues are responsible for nearly one-third of home Christmas tree fires.
    • Although rare, Christmas tree fires can spread rapidly and cause severe damage.
    • Heat sources too close to the tree cause over 20% of such fires.
