SALISBURY, Maryland — In celebration of GIS Day, the City of Salisbury is proud to unveil a new Story Map that highlights the City’s innovative use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS is a powerful tool that allows cities to collect, analyze, and display spatial data to inform decision-making, improve services, and plan for the future. From interactive maps to real-time dashboards, GIS helps the City visualize everything from utility networks to emergency response times.
“GIS is at the heart of many City operations, and it’s a tool that impacts the daily lives of our residents,” said John O’Brien, Assistant Director of Information Services: GIS. “Whether you’re navigating our streets, exploring City services, or seeing how we respond to emergencies, GIS is working behind the scenes to make Salisbury a more connected, efficient, and informed community.”
The City of Salisbury has one of the most advanced GIS departments on the Eastern Shore, offering an array of innovative apps and maps that allow both City staff and residents to access valuable information. Among the offerings are tools like the Public GIS Viewers, which allow residents to explore City data, the Emergency Services Dashboard, which tracks fire and EMS response times, and the Open Data Portal, where anyone can download City-maintained GIS layers to create their own maps and analyses.
Salisbury’s GIS department continues to push the boundaries of what GIS can do, and GIS Day serves as a reminder of the technology’s growing importance. As a leader in the GIS field, the City of Salisbury is committed to making this powerful tool accessible and useful to all — whether you’re in City planning, public safety, or simply curious about your neighborhood.
“GIS is much more than just a map,” says Kyla Cupp the City’s GIS Analyst. “It’s a tool that empowers every department in the City to make better decisions and deliver better services. It’s a critical part of how we plan, respond, and grow.”
In celebration of GIS Day, residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the Story Map, which offers a peek at just a few of the City’s GIS applications that help inform and shape Salisbury. This release marks a continued effort to raise awareness about the value of GIS and to demonstrate how it plays a role in making Salisbury a model for innovation in the region.
