Poplar Hill Mansion to Host America250 Potluck Picnic and Quilt Show

    June 15, 2026

SALISBURY, Md. — Poplar Hill Mansion will host two community events in 2026 as part of America250, the national celebration marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Events include a community potluck picnic in July and a quilt show in September.
“Poplar Hill Mansion is proud to participate in the national America250 celebration while focusing on Salisbury’s local story.” said Sarah Meyers, Curator of Poplar Hill Mansion, “As Salisbury approaches our own anniversary of 300 years, these events provide a great opportunity to not only commemorate our patriotic past, but also learn about the people and traditions that have made and continue to make Salisbury an exceptional place.”
The America250 Potluck Picnic at Poplar Hill will be held Sunday, July 5, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 117 Elizabeth St.
The free outdoor event invites the community to gather on the grounds of Salisbury’s oldest house. Guests are encouraged to bring a meaningful dish, such as a family recipe, a cultural dish, or a local tradition. Attendance is open to all, whether or not a dish is brought. Tables, chairs, plates, utensils, and water will be provided.
The museum will be open during the event. Visitors may view Long May It Wave: The Evolution of the American Flag on the second floor and learn more about Salisbury’s early history. The exhibit will be open throughout the Fourth of July weekend.
The picnic is an officially registered America250 event.
The America250 Quilt Show will take place Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. A rain date is set for Oct. 4.
The outdoor show highlights quilts inspired by American history, culture and identity. Quilting has long served as a form of storytelling through fabric.
    The show features five categories:
    • Three Cheers for the Red, White & Blue
    • America the Beautiful
    • I’ve Been Everywhere
    • Home of the Brave
    • Ballad of Americans
Quilters from across the region may submit one entry per category. Drop-off begins Aug. 15. Final submissions are due Sept. 19 at Poplar Hill Mansion.
Winners in each category and Best in Show will be selected by public vote. Prizes will be awarded.
The mansion will be open during the event and will feature historic quilts from its collection alongside community entries.
