SALISBURY, Maryland – The Salisbury Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division was honored this week with the Maryland Stars of Life Outstanding EMS Program Award, presented by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS). This recognition celebrates the success and impact of the innovative SWIFT (Salisbury Wicomico Integrated Firstcare Team) initiative.
The SWIFT program is a vital partnership among the Wicomico County Health Department, Tidal Health, and the Salisbury Fire Department (SFD). It was created to address a growing need in our community: reducing non-emergency calls to 911 by connecting individuals with appropriate health resources.
Residents of Wicomico County who have called 911 for non-emergency assistance more than five times within a six-month period are identified and contacted by the SWIFT team. This dedicated team—comprised of a paramedic from the Salisbury Fire Department and a practitioner nurse from Tidal Health’s Community Health team—conducts home visits, helping participants access primary care providers, behavioral health services, and other crucial support systems.
We extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to all who make this program possible. To our frontline EMS personnel, our healthcare partners, and our public health officials—thank you for your vision, compassion, and tireless commitment to improving the well-being of our community.
The SWIFT initiative is more than a program—it’s a lifeline for many in our community and a shining example of how collaboration can lead to better health outcomes and a more effective EMS system. This week’s recognition reflects not just innovation, but heart.
Congratulations to the entire SWIFT team on this well-deserved honor—and thank you for making Salisbury a stronger, healthier community.
