Beaver Dam Drive at North Park Drive will be closed between East Main Street and Hillside Drive tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 19, from noon to 4 p.m.
Residents of North Park Drive, East Main Street, Hillside Drive and Beaver Dam Drive will be able to pass through with assistance from flaggers. All other traffic is asked to use alternate routes during this time.
Ben’s Red Swings and the Salisbury Zoo will remain open. The entrance to the Zoo at Ben’s Red Swings, where Beaver Dam Drive intersects with South Park Drive, will be partially blocked through the end of the week; however, parking will remain available. The Zoo entrance at South Park Drive with the roundabout leading to Memorial Plaza is expected to remain unobstructed.
The closure is part of a major infrastructure project by the City of Salisbury Department of Water Works to replace the raw water main that carries water from the City’s well field to the water treatment plant.
The project will cover approximately 3,300 feet and include pipe sizes ranging from 24 inches to 8 inches, with several sections requiring boring, including under the river. The existing raw water main, which dates back as far as 1925, is being replaced to ensure reliable service. A portion closest to the plant was replaced in 2006 after a failure. This new project will replace the remaining main, piping and valves connected to active wells.
Construction will be completed without interrupting the existing raw water main, well leads or wells. The new main will be connected to the existing system, but valves will remain closed until the transition is complete. Wet leads will be constructed one at a time to allow for coordinated well shutdowns during connections.
Please note: Sections of the walking path through City Park and past the Salisbury Zoo may be temporarily dug up during construction. Work is beginning near the Dog Park and Tennis Courts and will progress along the East Branch past Memorial Plaza.
The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026. We appreciate your patience while this important work is underway.
