SALISBURY, Maryland — The City of Salisbury is tracking the heavy rain, high winds and coastal flooding that are forecast for Tuesday, Jan. 9, and is prepared to deal with any issues that arise. Please be aware of potential flooding and keep an eye on our communications channels for updates.
“If we receive the amount of rain that is being forecast, recent history shows us that there will be flooding in some areas,” Director of Field Operations Mike Dryden said. “We will be prepared to close anything not safe to travel and to communicate those closures to the public.”
Large amounts of rain could produce flooding as low lying areas are more susceptible due to tidal influence. Residents should once again be hyper alert in known flooding problem areas including Northwood and Fitzwater.
The City will also be in communication with The Maryland Department of Transportation about any potential closures of Route 13 — including any resulting detours — and will pass those on through our communications channels.
Please exercise caution and stay safe on the roads. Most importantly, do not attempt to cross high water. Just six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling. According to the National Weather Service, water may be deeper than it appears and can hide hazards such as sharp objects, washed-out road surfaces, electrical wires, chemicals, etc. A vehicle caught in swiftly moving water can be swept away in seconds. Twelve inches of water can float a car or small SUV and 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles.
