Salisbury – Mayor Jake Day is pleased to announce that the Salisbury Fire Department has earned Maryland Jurisdictional EMS Operational Program (JEMSOP) designation from the Maryland EMS Board. The JEMSOP designation will allow the City to operate with a greater degree of autonomy and opens up access to multiple funding opportunities. Previously, the City’s EMS operations had fallen under the Wicomico County JEMSOP, as part of Maryland’s Region IV.
MIEMSS (Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems) assigned affiliation number 380000 to the Salisbury Fire Department. With the 11-member EMS board’s approval on December 14, 2021, Salisbury became one of only 5 non-county JEMSOP agencies, joining the City of Annapolis, the Town of Ocean City, Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport, and Maryland State Police.
The EMS Board’s decision is predicated on the understanding that the Salisbury Fire Department will continue to work closely with its EMS partners in Wicomico County to ensure the highest level of service and care to the communities served. The City’s Fire and EMS services have a long history of amicable partnerships with surrounding agencies in the form of automatic aid, mutual aid, and numerous cooperative programs aimed at improving the lives of Wicomico County citizens – such as SWIFT (the Salisbury-Wicomico Integrated First-care Team). The designation will not alter existing 911 response modes or the SWIFT program in any way, meaning that residents and visitors of Salisbury and Wicomico County will continue to receive the same competent and compassionate care from Salisbury Fire and EMS.
“MIEMSS sets exacting standards for EMS operations in the state, so receiving the JEMSOP designation is testament to the effectiveness and consistency of Salisbury Fire and EMS operations,” said Mayor Jake Day. “I’m proud of the Salisbury Fire Department, Chief John Tull, and Captain Chris Truitt for the work they do every day to keep these services running nimbly, efficiently, and at the very pinnacle of excellence.”
