SUMMARY:Pollinator Day at the Salisbury Zoo
DESCRIPTION:The Salisbury Zoological Park will be celebrating National Pollinator Week\, June 20 through June 27\, with pollinator-friendly activities. National Pollinator Week is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. In 2007 the U.S. Senate approved and designated a week in June as “National Pollinator Week”. This was a very positive step to address the decline of pollinator populations. This initiative has spread internationally to get the word out about the importance of the valuable ecosystems provided by pollinators (bees\, birds\, butterflies\, bats and beetles). Did you know that one-third of all of our food that we eat depends on pollinators and over 100 of our crops depend on bees to help them produce? \nIn March 2018\, the City of Salisbury became the 100th Bee City affiliate. Through this affiliation\, the City of Salisbury is committed to creating sustainable habitats for pollinators and to educate the public on how they can help. By celebrating National Pollinator Week at the Zoo we can get the community involved in this initiative. During the week\, visitors will be able to learn about pollinators throughout the zoo at the Zoo’s herb\, pollinator\, and demonstration vegetable garden. Most of the activities will be held on June 27\, 10 am-2 pm. During that day\, local beekeepers and master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about bees and other pollinators. Children will be able to participate in pollinator activities. All activities are free. Check the Zoo’s Facebook page that week as we will have daily posts on pollinators.
